SkinPen by Crown Aesthetics (formerly Bellus Medical) is the first microneedling device in the world cleared by the FDA.  The device works by creating hundreds of microscopic channels in the skin.  These micro-channels stimulate your body’s normal healing process to produce healthy, new cells and extracellular material, such as collagen and elastin, which remodels the skin.  The production of collagen and elastin diminishes as we age, which leads to wrinkles, skin laxity and other signs of aging.  SkinPen is extremely effective in diminishing the appearance of scarring and reducing the signs of aging.  Increased collagen and elastin provide a rejuvenated, youthful appearance by smoothing lines, wrinkles, and uneven skin texture.  Improved elasticity also causes skin tightening.  It can be used on all parts of the body, including the face, neck, arms, legs, hands, abdomen and back.  It is safe for ALL skin types and can be used year-round since it does not require thermal energy or chemicals applied to the skin.

PROCEDURE

The SkinPen procedure takes about 30 minutes and is done after a numbing cream is applied to minimize discomfort.  After treatment, you may experience effects similar to a mild sunburn.  There is little downtime and patients can return to normal activities and wearing make up after just one day.  Noticeable changes are typically seen just one week following treatment and gradually improve as the body continues its natural healing process.

RESULTS

SkinPen results will vary.  The number and depth of treatments required will depend on the goals and results you want to achieve.  Treatments are spaced 4 weeks apart.  Patients with uneven skin tone and fine lines may see desired results after just one SkinPen procedure, while those wanting to soften the appearance of acne scarring will likely require several procedures.  The usual recommendation is a series of three treatments.
